Taipei, May 1 (CNA) Today marks May Day, or Labor Day. Premier Cho Jung-tai stated that Taiwan's economic growth rate was 8.68% last year, and the estimated rate for the first quarter of this year is 13.69%, which may be a 39-year high. These economic achievements are the result of the diligent efforts of workers, and the benefits must be returned to workers and the public through welfare policies and a good labor environment. He will strive to make Taiwan a fairer, more hopeful, and civilized country.
Cho Jung-tai conveyed through social media that on Labor Day, he wants to pay tribute to workers from all walks of life, affirming that every form of labor is the pride of Taiwan. He reiterated that Taiwan's economic growth rate was 8.68% in 2025, and the estimated rate for the first quarter of this year is 13.69%, potentially setting a new 39-year high. These economic achievements are all attributed to the diligent efforts of workers.
He stated that these economic benefits must be returned to every worker and citizen through more protections and rights, welfare policies that genuinely reduce burdens, better working environments, and more opportunities.
Cho Jung-tai also used infographics to explain that the government has already introduced measures to improve workplace conditions, including revisions to the Occupational Safety and Health Act to prevent safety loopholes and workplace bullying. They are also promoting a new system for employers supporting the employment of persons with disabilities and trial implementation guidelines for employers supporting employees with disabilities. Furthermore, they are rejecting pregnancy discrimination; if an employer is found to be in violation, they will be fined up to NT$1.5 million and their company name and responsible person's name will be publicized.
