(Central News Agency reporter Lin Hsing-chien, Manila, 1st exclusive report) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. met with former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida yesterday. Amidst the Middle East tensions affecting global energy supply, the two sides deepened energy security cooperation and accelerated the transition from fossil fuels to cleaner, more resilient energy systems.
Marcos (Ferdinand Marcos Jr.) posted on Facebook last night, writing that the Philippines and Japan are working together to ensure stable fuel supply, introduce investment in power projects, and create employment opportunities for Filipinos.
He added, "I met with Mr. Fumio Kishida, Special Envoy of Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi of Japan, to advance the cooperation between our two countries under the 'Asia Zero Emission Community' (AZEC) initiative."
Fumio Kishida, currently the Supreme Advisor of the Liberal Democratic Party's parliamentary alliance in Japan, visited the Philippines from April 30th to May 2nd to attend a series of high-level meetings, promote the AZEC initiative, and strengthen bilateral relations between the Philippines and Japan.
The Philippine Presidential Communications Office (PCO) stated that when Marcos met Kishida yesterday, he emphasized that the AZEC initiative is even more urgent given the significant impact of the current Middle East situation on the global energy system.
Marcos pointed out that global energy supply disruptions show that the Philippines must accelerate its transition to cleaner and more resilient energy systems. "We hope to continue our cooperation to help both countries gradually move away from dependence on fossil fuels and absorb more renewable energy technologies."
On the other hand, Kishida reiterated that Japan will promote the AZEC initiative he proposed in 2022 to foster regional decarbonization and energy cooperation.
Kishida thanked Marcos for attending the AZEC online summit held on April 15th and emphasized the importance of strengthening economic and energy resilience between the Philippines and Japan.
During the meeting, Kishida handed Marcos a handwritten letter from Sanae Takaichi, conveying Japan's willingness to strengthen cooperation with the Philippines, especially with the Philippines hosting the 4th AZEC Leaders' Meeting in November.
Kishida's visit comes as Japan just announced a $10 billion energy cooperation framework to help Asian countries cope with energy supply disruptions by supporting fuel procurement, strengthening supply chains, and expanding regional energy security cooperation. (Editor: Tang Sheng-yang) 1150501
