(Central News Agency reporter Huang Qiaowen, Taipei, 1st) At 8:39 PM tonight, a magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred in the eastern waters of Taiwan. The Central Weather Administration stated that this is the largest earthquake observed so far this year, classified as an independent event, and warned that aftershocks of magnitude 5 to 5.5 might occur within the next 3 days.

According to the latest information from the Central Weather Administration, the magnitude 6.1 earthquake occurred at 8:39 PM tonight, with a depth of 98.3 kilometers. The epicenter was located 38.7 kilometers east-northeast of the Yilan County Government (in the eastern waters of Taiwan). The maximum intensity reached level 4 in Yilan County, Hsinchu County, Nantou County, and Hualien County.

Wu Jian-fu, Director of the Seismological Center of the Central Weather Administration, told Central News Agency reporters that this earthquake is an independent event and the largest observed this year. The cause of the earthquake is the subduction of the Philippine Sea Plate beneath the Earth's interior off the coast of Hualien.

Wu Jian-fu stated that due to the epicenter being close to densely populated urban areas and the basin effect, residents in high-rise buildings in Taipei and New Taipei might feel the tremor more significantly.

Wu Jian-fu pointed out that it is estimated that aftershocks of magnitude 5 to 5.5 will still occur within the next 3 days, reminding the public to be vigilant. (Edited by Li Shuhua) 1150501
