(Central News Agency reporter Huang Tzu-chiang, Kuala Lumpur, 1st) In December 2024, the Republic of China flag on the automated immigration kiosks at Kuala Lumpur Airport was covered, causing controversy over unclear identification despite Taiwan still being able to use automated clearance. Taiwan's representative in Malaysia, Lien Yu-ping, stated that she hopes Malaysia will quickly find other methods to make relevant signs clear and explicit, facilitating convenience for Taiwanese citizens.

The Malaysia Taiwan Chamber of Commerce and Industry held its 18th 3rd Board of Supervisors and Directors Meeting yesterday. Lien Yu-ping, representative of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia, responded to questions from the Central News Agency after the meeting regarding the covering of the flag at Kuala Lumpur Airport.

In June 2024, Malaysia added 36 low-risk countries and regions, including Taiwan, for automated immigration clearance. At that time, Kuala Lumpur Airport prominently displayed the Republic of China flag alongside other countries.

However, in December of the same year, the flag was covered. The Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs responded at the time that this change did not affect the eligibility of Taiwanese travelers to use automated immigration clearance, and they could still pass quickly.

Lien Yu-ping pointed out that Taiwan appreciates Malaysia's opening of automated immigration clearance, but "this benefit should not be removed due to pressure from 'certain countries'." From practical observation, Taiwanese citizens arriving at the airport will first observe whether they can use automated immigration. If the signage issue causes inconvenience to the people, it will also hinder substantive exchanges between the two peoples.

Lien Yu-ping also said that the signs should be clearer and more understandable, so as not to make Taiwanese citizens run back and forth between customs and automated clearance, otherwise it would be meaningless and waste everyone's time, harming the perception of Malaysia among Taiwanese people.

She emphasized in her interview that this year is Malaysia's tourism year, and Taiwan is very eager to respond, but still hopes that Malaysia will quickly find other ways to make the "signage" clear and explicit, facilitating convenient entry and exit for Taiwanese citizens.

Regarding the covering of the Republic of China flag on the Kuala Lumpur Airport automated immigration kiosk, some Taiwanese travelers have reported that the signage during the immigration process is not clear enough, and some citizens have also expressed dissatisfaction to the airport via email, hoping that relevant signs can be further improved to reduce inconvenience during immigration.
