(Central News Agency reporter Shen Pei-Hao, Taipei, 1st) As summer approaches, many desire to slim down quickly. A woman in her 30s strictly calculated her daily calorie intake and engaged in疯狂 intense exercise, losing 10kg in 2 months, but experienced chest tightness, palpitations, and blurred vision. Doctors warn that extreme weight loss can lead to the body shutting down, potentially endangering life.
As the weather begins to warm up, wearing light, short-sleeved clothing causes many to enter a period of "body image anxiety." Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng, a practicing weight loss physician, shared in a news release today that a woman in her 30s, wanting to make a grand appearance at her wedding, adopted an extreme diet combined with high-intensity exercise daily.
When Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng met this patient, although she successfully lost 10kg within 2 months, she found that her menstrual cycle became irregular during that period, she experienced hair loss, her emotions became unstable, she often felt cold, and easily caught colds. During one training session, she experienced chest tightness, palpitations, and blurred vision, nearly fainting at the gym. Finally, persuaded by her family, she decided to seek professional help.
"This type of high-pressure, imbalanced weight loss method can induce 'Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (REDs),' and in severe cases, it can be fatal," Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng pointed out.
Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng explained that when the energy intake, after deducting exercise consumption, is insufficient to support basic operations such as heartbeat, breathing, and hormone secretion, the body determines it has entered a state of energy deficiency. It then shuts down some non-essential physiological functions, which can lead to decreased thyroid function, increased stress hormones, bone loss, and even cardiovascular complications.
Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng stated that in the past, REDs was mostly seen in professional athletes. However, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) published a statement in the BJSM journal in 2023, pointing out that REDs can occur in athletes of different genders, different sports, and different performance levels. If ordinary people, under high activity levels, lack nutritional knowledge, are too busy to eat regularly, or intentionally do not replenish energy after exercise, they may unknowingly cross the REDs red line.
While pursuing beauty, one must also consider life. To prevent weight loss from becoming a future "metabolic debt," Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng reminds people of three major weight loss principles: first, a balanced and nutritious diet. Fat loss does not mean blindly suppressing calorie intake; the key is to establish a stable and balanced daily diet. Insufficient long-term calorie intake may negatively affect metabolic stability.
Second, exercise within one's capacity. Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng emphasized avoiding sudden increases in training intensity when energy intake is insufficient. Finally, one should seek professional help. Weight loss is not just about changes in weight numbers, but rather the management of overall metabolism and physiological state. Through evaluation and tracking by doctors and nutritionists, strategies can be adjusted early to avoid metabolic damage and establish a sustainable healthy model.
Dr. Liu Yao-Tseng said that weight loss is not about pursuing speed, but about long-term sustainability. When the body receives a stable energy supply, combined with regular lifestyle and dietary adjustments, there is an opportunity to truly stabilize body shape while reducing the risk of rebound weight gain and metabolic imbalance.
