US Official Confirms Rubio and Wang Yi Spoke Before Trump's China Visit

Chinese state media reported that Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio today by phone; a US official, responding to a CNA reporter's question on background, briefly stated, "This was a pre-trip call for the US President's visit."

CCTV News reported that Wang Yi stated during the call that head-of-state diplomacy has always been the "stabilizer" of US-China relations. Under the strategic guidance of Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, "US-China relations have generally maintained stability."

According to the report, Wang Yi said that both sides should maintain the hard-won stable situation, "prepare well for important high-level interaction agendas," expand areas of cooperation, and manage differences. He also emphasized that "the Taiwan issue concerns China's core interests and is the biggest risk point in US-China relations. The US side should honor its commitments, make the right choice, open up new space for US-China cooperation, and make due efforts for world peace."

The report stated that Rubio said US-China relations are the most important bilateral relationship in the world, and head-of-state diplomacy is at the core of US-China relations. Both sides should maintain communication and coordination, respect each other, properly handle differences, accumulate results for high-level US-China interactions, and seek strategic stability in US-China relations.
