(Central News Agency reporter Huang Ya-shi, Rome, 30th exclusive report) Italy's "COMICON Napoli" kicked off today, with Taiwanese comics participating for the second time. A Taiwan comic exhibition area, resembling a national pavilion, will be set up in the convention's "Asia Village," inviting three Taiwanese comic artists to attend in person to interact with fans, showcasing the diverse charm and creative energy of Taiwanese comics to Italian and European readers.

Italy's "COMICON Napoli" will be held from April 30th to May 3rd. The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Italy collaborated with Big Block Culture to plan and promote Taiwanese comics' participation for the second consecutive year. Comic artists Heishan, Xiaozhuang, and Wei Li Ruo Ming were invited to Naples to hold autograph sessions, live drawing performances, and special lectures at the venue.

The Cultural Division of the Representative Office issued a press release stating that "COMICON Napoli" is an important event for Italian animation, comics, and gaming culture. In 2025, it set a new record of 183,000 visitors, making it the second-largest comic festival in Italy, after "Lucca Comics & Games," and the most important annual comic festival in Southern Italy. In recent years, it has utilized the COMICON brand system to organize various scales of comic festivals throughout Italy.

In addition to special exhibitions during the comic festival, such as Makoto Yukimura's "Vinland Saga" exhibition, there are also unique "OFF-site exhibitions," such as a retrospective exhibition of famous American underground cartoonist Robert Crumb in downtown Naples, highlighting the vitality and ambition of the exhibition.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Italy stated that building on the successful experience of participating for the first time in 2025 in a national pavilion-like format, this year they once again planned for Taiwanese comics to make their mark in Naples, aiming to enhance the brand visibility of Taiwanese comics among comic fans in Southern Italy and establish a unique image for Taiwanese comics.

On the second day of the 2025 exhibition, Italian Minister of Culture Alessandro Giuli visited the comic festival and was led by convention chairman Claudio Curcio to the Taiwan Pavilion, where he had a pleasant conversation with comic artist Jian Jia-cheng and Big Block Culture's executive curator Lin Yi-chun, expressing welcome for Taiwan's continued participation in various Italian comic festivals.

This year, in addition to showcasing the representative works of the three invited comic artists, the Taiwan Pavilion will also exhibit more than 20 newly published Taiwanese comic works. It will also connect with the Ministry of Culture's Books From Taiwan project, arranging multiple copyright meetings, inviting participating publishers, and arranging joint interviews with several professional comic media such as AnimeClick, to expand the reach of Taiwanese comics in professional fields and communities.

According to the Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Italy, the works of the three Taiwanese comic artists participating in this exhibition – Heishan, Xiaozhuang, and Wei Li Ruo Ming – have been authorized for translation and publication in multiple countries and have been highly acclaimed. The Italian IF Publishing Group's comic brand Toshokan Publishing will pre-release the first volume of Heishan's work "Mop Wants to Earn Cans by Himself" in Italian during the comic festival, and will also co-host a new book launch with the Taiwan Pavilion.

Xiaozhuang will present his classic work "The Magician on the Skywalk" comic adaptation to Italian readers on-site, offering Italian fans a special cultural perspective on Taiwanese history; Wei Li Ruo Ming will sign for readers with "Funeral Concerto" and will also showcase her new work "Us Without Tomorrow," presenting a unique Taiwanese-style romantic transnational love story.

In addition, the Taiwan Pavilion will also promote several other excellent Taiwanese comic creators such as Wang Deng-yu, Xiaodao, and Gene, hoping to help Italian publishers discover the diverse facets of Taiwanese comics and facilitate copyright promotion.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Italy stated that the authorization of Taiwanese comics in Italian grew against the trend during the pandemic, with the number continuously climbing, reaching a cumulative total of 45 volumes by the end of 2025. The types covered are wide-ranging, from historical narratives and social realism to fantasy romance, demonstrating that Taiwanese comics already have a considerable readership base and confidence from publishers in the Italian market.

The Cultural Division of the Taipei Representative Office in Italy analyzed that the brand recognition of Taiwanese comics in Italy still has room for continuous growth. The Ministry of Culture hopes to deepen Italian readers' understanding of Taiwan's historical and cultural context by participating in important comic exhibitions and inviting creators to attend in person. Through accumulating exhibition experience year by year, they aim to establish a stable and recognizable brand image for Taiwanese comics in the Italian publishing market, cultivating the influence of Taiwanese cultural content in Italy.
