(Central News Agency, Taipei, 30th, Reporter Zeng Yi-ning) Grandma Jin, 86, who used to exercise with friends daily, mostly used a wheelchair after a fall caused a hip injury, and reduced her exercise due to fear of falling again. However, Hondao's outreach service helped her discover that even in a wheelchair, she could exercise within her capabilities.

Grandma Jin was a senior who lived a comfortable life, meeting friends every morning to exercise at the elementary school, maintaining a happy and healthy old age for many years. But one time, she sat cross-legged for too long and accidentally fell when getting up, resulting in an injury to her left hip.

After surgery, Grandma Jin mostly used a wheelchair and reduced going out and exercising due to fear of falling again. One time, when she was out with her family, they passed by a park and saw many healthy seniors exercising together, including some in wheelchairs, raising their hands and lifting their legs with fitness coaches, moving in their own way, not letting mobility issues limit their exercise opportunities. The lively music and happy atmosphere attracted Grandma Jin and her family's attention.

Grandma Jin thus rekindled her passion for exercise and participated in this event organized by the Hondao Senior Citizens Welfare Foundation. She was initially worried about not being able to keep up with everyone's pace, but with the guidance of professional coaches, she gradually managed upper body stretches, arm swings, and even leg raises, awakening the leg muscles that had been sedentary for a long time, and also met many like-minded partners who were working hard to exercise.

Li Hsiu-jung, a social worker at Hondao Xisong Day Care, said that most seniors in the community start using wheelchairs after a fall, which limits their mobility and accelerates muscle degeneration. Hondao combines fitness courses, allowing seniors to participate conveniently and locally, developing regular exercise habits as soon as they leave home, maintaining physical function, and acquiring knowledge and skills for home exercise and delaying muscle degeneration.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare's 2024 Top Ten Causes of Death statistics, "falls (and falling)" ranks as the second leading cause of accidental injury, which is the 7th overall cause of death. The National Health Agency's 2021 "National Health Interview Survey" also showed that one in six seniors had fallen, and one in twelve seniors had sought medical attention due to a fall.

Facing the risk of falls among seniors, Hondao promotes fitness courses and community outreach for preventive care concepts, with the "Senior Muscle Strength Support Program" at its core. Through establishing exercise habits and promoting nutritional concepts, it helps seniors learn to care for their muscle strength and maintain mobility in daily life, preventing muscle loss year by year, which can lead to falls or other diseases.

Hondao stated that this year's service funding still requires NT$1.2 million, inviting the public to show their love and respond with donations, and pay attention to the issue of muscle strength in seniors.
