(Central News Agency reporter Zhao Jingyu, Taipei, 30th) After a seven-year hiatus, German theater heavyweight director Christopher Rüping will bring one of his representative works, "It's Only the End of the World," to the stage, leading the audience to question the relationships of family, memory, and rupture.

Director Rüping stated at a press conference today that this is the first part of his "Family Trilogy," which explores the construction of "family" in the 21st century across three independent works. "This play is not just about someone returning home, but about who has the right to tell the story of this family, and to what extent are we defined by where we come from when one re-enters the family?"

The play brings together a powerful cast from German theater and film, including film and theater queen Corinna Harfouch, Benjamin Lillie, who won the Nestroy Theatre Prize, and Maja Beckmann, all top choices.

Rüping is hailed as one of the most representative directors in contemporary European theater, having long collaborated with the Schauspielhaus Zürich and Deutsches Theater Berlin, and has been selected five times for the Berliner Theatertreffen, the highest honor in German-language theater.

"It's Only the End of the World" is adapted from the play of the same name by French playwright Jean-Luc Lagarce. It was adapted into a film in 2016 and won the Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival.

The story tells of a man who returns home after 12 years away, attempting to say goodbye to his family as his life nears its end, but constantly misses opportunities to speak amidst silence and misunderstanding. Differences in class and sexual orientation gradually widen the distance between him and his family. Rüping stated that the man's ruthless sense of loneliness makes silence a deep emotional abyss, "Through this gaze, the unspeakable cracks between family members are revealed."

Rüping continues his signature creative approach, directly exposing the stage mechanism to the audience's view, and through real-time video projection, the audience simultaneously watches the live performance and close-up shots, magnifying the subtle expressions and emotions of the characters. Rüping stated that projection is not just an aid, but a core tool for reconstructing the way of viewing, "It allows us to cut time and also allows the audience to enter the inner state of the characters."
