(Central News Agency, Sydney, 30th comprehensive foreign report) The Royal Commission today released a preliminary investigation report on the Sydney Bondi Beach shooting, proposing 14 recommendations including strengthening security measures for Jewish public activities and promoting gun reform. It also concluded that Australia's existing laws did not impede security agencies from preventing or responding to this attack.

According to Reuters and AFP, a father and son were accused last December of opening fire on Jewish families celebrating Hanukkah at Bondi Beach in Sydney, killing 15 people and making it Australia's deadliest mass shooting in nearly 30 years.

After the shooting, the victims' families criticized Prime Minister Albanese for hesitating to initiate an investigation. Under pressure from families and Jewish advocacy groups, the "Royal Commission" tasked with investigating the case was subsequently established in January this year.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese stated that the government will adopt all preliminary recommendations made by the Royal Commission. Although the report did not present an urgent need for reform, it still offered recommendations for strengthening Australia's counter-terrorism capabilities.

Australia is known for its strict gun control, and this incident has sparked widespread calls for strengthened efforts against anti-Semitism and more rigorous gun control.

The 154-page preliminary report recommended a comprehensive review of all joint counter-terrorism teams across Australia. The investigation results are to be submitted to the Police Commissioner and the Director-General of Security Intelligence within three months.

Citing Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, the report called for extending the security protocols implemented during these periods to other important Jewish holidays and activities. It also recommended promptly updating counter-terrorism manuals, involving high-level government officials in counter-terrorism exercises, and accelerating the implementation of the planned national gun buyback program.

In addition, the report also revealed that days before the incident, a Jewish volunteer group had warned the police that violence might occur during the Hanukkah celebration, but the police only stated that they could not provide dedicated police force and could only dispatch mobile patrol units to "check and monitor the activity."

The Royal Commission's public hearings will begin next week, and the final report is expected to be completed by the end of the year. (Compiled by Chang Ming-Hsuan) 1150430
