(Central News Agency reporter Guan Rui-ping, Miaoli County, 30th) A dead ferret-badger found in the Zhongxing Industrial Park, Tongluo Township, Miaoli County, in mid-March was sampled and sent for testing, confirming it as a rabies positive case. The county's Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office stated today that this is the first case in Tongluo Township, and they have initiated monitoring and epidemic prevention awareness in the surrounding areas, and urgently added vaccination sessions.

Miaoli County Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office pointed out that since March 2023, Miaoli County has accumulated 30 rabies positive cases in wild ferret-badgers, distributed in Zhuolan Township (4 cases), Tai'an Township (3 cases), Nanzhuang Township (1 case), Dahu Township (6 cases), Sanyi Township (8 cases), Gongguan Township (2 cases), and Tongxiao Township (5 cases). This time, an additional case was found in Tongluo Township. Currently, cases are still limited to wild ferret-badgers in mountainous areas, with no records of infection in other species.

The Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office stated that this case in Tongluo Township was reported by a citizen on March 17, who found a dead ferret-badger in the Tongluo Zhongxing Industrial Park. Preliminary tests by the Veterinary Pathology and Biology Research Institute Laboratory of National Chung Hsing University showed it to be rabies positive; subsequent re-testing by the Animal Health Research Institute of the Ministry of Agriculture today confirmed it as a rabies positive case.

The Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office pointed out that this case is the first rabies positive ferret-badger case in Tongluo Township. They have launched enhanced epidemic monitoring and prevention awareness in Tongluo Township and surrounding areas, and urgently coordinated with the Tongluo Township Office to plan additional rabies vaccination sessions in villages near the affected area, reminding pet owners to promptly bring their dogs and cats for rabies booster vaccinations.

The Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office stated that currently, the Animal Protection Education Park (shelter) in Chaoyang Village, Tongluo Township, provides free rabies vaccination services for dogs and cats to Tongluo residents. Vaccinations can be scheduled by phone from Tuesday to Friday; they also promote a "Home Vaccination Project for 10 or More Dogs and Cats." As Tongluo Township is a newly added positive case area, residents can invite relatives, friends, or neighbors to gather 10 or more dogs and cats, and the Animal Protection and Health Inspection Office will arrange home vaccinations free of charge, to improve overall epidemic prevention coverage.
