(Central News Agency reporter Chao Min-Ya, Taipei, 30th) With Taiwan's declining birthrate problem becoming increasingly severe, National Development Council (NDC) Chairman Yeh Chun-Hsien stated today at the Legislative Yuan that the Presidential Office and Executive Yuan are expected to make a major announcement soon. Related policies may include expanding the "0-6 National Parenting" program and even extending its applicable age to alleviate family burdens.

Today, the Economic Committee of the Legislative Yuan reviewed parts of the budget for the National Development Council and its affiliated units, inviting Yeh Chun-Hsien to report and answer questions. Legislators Lai Rui-Long and Tsai Yi-Yu of the Democratic Progressive Party pointed out that South Korea's recent extension of parental leave and full pay subsidies have shown initial results, with a slow rise in birth rates, and asked whether Taiwan could learn from relevant experiences.

Tsai Yi-Yu stated that to solve the declining birthrate crisis, South Korea extended the total length of parental leave from one year to 1.5 years, and if both parents take parental leave, the full pay subsidy increased from three months to six months, while also imposing obligations and incentives on companies. Although Taiwan has the "0-6 National Parenting" policy, its effectiveness is not yet apparent.

Yeh Chun-Hsien pointed out that South Korea experienced a small population growth wave in the early 1990s, and that generation is now entering childbearing age. However, he also admitted that South Korea provides more social support in encouraging childbirth compared to Taiwan.

Yeh Chun-Hsien stated that the Presidential Office and Executive Yuan have held multiple meetings, and the NDC has also continuously participated in coordination. The Presidential Office and Executive Yuan are expected to make a major announcement soon, with a series of measures likely to be launched, possibly including expanding the "0-6 National Parenting" program and even extending the applicable age. The overall direction of new measures is close to South Korean policies. He gave examples such as possibly expanding paternity leave for men, and also evaluating ways to reduce the burden on businesses to allow workers to take care leave with greater peace of mind.
