NAYPYIDAW (Central News Agency) — A member of Aung San Suu Kyi's legal team said today that the detained former leader of Myanmar has received another sentence reduction, further shortening her term by one-sixth, marking the second reduction in two weeks.

Reuters reported that the legal team member, speaking on condition of anonymity, stated that the Nobel laureate, who has been imprisoned since the 2021 military coup that overthrew the government, will now have a remaining sentence of just over 18 years.

After a marathon trial, the 80-year-old Aung San Suu Kyi was sentenced to 33 years in prison on charges including corruption, incitement to election fraud, and violating the Official Secrets Act. Her allies insist these charges are politically motivated, aimed at removing her from politics.

Her sentence was first reduced to 27 years, and then further shortened by one-sixth on April 17 during a Myanmar New Year amnesty. During that amnesty, her ally and former president Win Myint, who was tried alongside her, was released.

According to an announcement issued today by Myanmar state media, Aung San Suu Kyi's sentence was further reduced due to a general reduction for all prisoners.

Aung San Suu Kyi's current whereabouts are unknown, and she has not appeared publicly since her trial concluded.

Authorities continue to hold her at an undisclosed location, and the government has so far not allowed her legal team or family to meet with her.

A military junta spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment. (Edited by Chen Yu-ting) 1150430
