(Central News Agency reporter Lin Chang-shun, Taipei, April 30) Three security personnel, surnamed Jiang, Lin, and Tu, who were responsible for security duties when President Lai Ching-te attended the Taiwan-Japan baseball international exchange game at Taipei Dome in February this year, were indicted today by the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for allegedly stealing signed baseballs and passport covers during a pre-game venue security check.

According to the indictment from the Taipei District Prosecutors Office, Lin was formerly a lieutenant colonel editor at the National Security Bureau's Special Service Command Center, Tu was formerly a major staff member at the National Security Bureau's Special Service Center, and Jiang was a major staff member of the Military Police Command's Guard Brigade supporting the Special Service Center. All were civil servants serving in state-affiliated agencies with statutory duties and powers.

The prosecution stated that Lin, Tu, and Jiang were all special service personnel responsible for security duties at Taipei Dome on February 27 this year. Around 7:47 AM on that day, they discovered a cardboard box containing multiple signed baseballs by cheerleaders, placed and managed by Ting Han Sports Marketing Co., Ltd., on the floor of the Taipei Dome cheerleaders' lounge. Jiang allegedly stole signed baseballs, while Tu handed his briefcase to Jiang to hold them. Jiang then stole 6 signed baseballs from the box around 7:49 AM.

As Jiang was leaving, he saw another cardboard box containing a large number of passport covers, also placed and managed by Ting Han Sports Marketing Co., Ltd., in front of the entrance from the lounge to the Taipei Dome parking lot. He then decided to steal 6 passport covers from that box.

The prosecution pointed out that Tu divided the signed baseballs and passport covers stolen by Jiang into two sets each. When Lin and Jiang arrived at Tu's office, Tu distributed two signed baseballs and two passport covers to each of them, while Tu himself kept two signed baseballs and two passport covers.

Ting Han Sports Marketing Co., Ltd. reported the missing signed baseballs to the police on March 1. The Xinyi Precinct of the Taipei City Police Department notified Jiang to appear on March 3. Upon appearing, Jiang voluntarily returned 6 signed baseballs and 2 passport covers, claiming he thought they were discarded baseballs and took them.

The Xinyi Precinct and the National Security Bureau referred the case to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation. The prosecutor concluded the investigation today and indicted Lin, Tu, and Jiang for theft and receiving stolen property under the Criminal Code, and requested the confiscation of the remaining 4 passport covers that have not yet been returned.

National Security Bureau Director-General Tsai Ming-yen stated earlier that all three have received two major demerits and have been placed on the priority list for dismissal. (Editor: Li Hsi-chang) 1150430
