(Central News Agency reporter Wu Shu-wei, Taipei, 29th) Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, drones have changed the battlefield dynamics, and counter-drone defense systems have become equally important. US and European manufacturers stated at a conference today that they hope to strengthen cooperation with Taiwan, mentioning that Taiwan is an island, different from the terrain of Ukraine, and the experience gained from R&D in Taiwan can promote innovation in counter-drone products for the democratic camp.

The Alliance of Democracies, the DSET (Center for Science, Democracy and Society Research) think tank under the National Science and Technology Council, the Center for European Values Security Policy, and the Asia Innovation Center Manufacturers Association jointly held a closed-door roundtable meeting on "Taiwan's Shield: Drone Defense Systems in Modern Warfare" today, followed by a press conference.

Nicolai Laugesen, Revenue Director of Danish technology company MyDefence, pointed out that MyDefence specializes in the R&D and production of counter-drone technology, with products currently deployed in the United States and NATO countries. They also have an innovation lab in Ukraine. This time, they hope to convey that "the speed of cooperation" is key. Lessons learned from the battlefields in Ukraine and the Middle East show that artillery is no longer the most important on the battlefield; drones have become paramount, and armies need to protect themselves from drone attacks.

Laugesen stated that NATO countries update their combat concepts every 15 to 20 months, and the speed of thought updates and upgrades needs to be just as fast. Therefore, cooperation among industry, government, academia, and research is the only way. He hopes to seek cooperation opportunities through today's meeting and also looks forward to establishing operational bases in Taiwan in the future.

Regarding counter-drones, Ernest Ng, Asia-Pacific Business Director of US radar platform company Echodyne, said there is no panacea or silver bullet to ensure infallibility, because counter-drones involve a multi-layered new combat system that requires responding to threats through multi-sensor approaches. Taking radar systems as an example, radars before the Russia-Ukraine war detected military aircraft and missiles, but the battlefield evolved too quickly. Radars need to become smaller for mobility and be able to accurately detect drones.

He pointed out that the radar system developed by Echodyne can detect the type, speed, and expected flight direction of incoming drones, and some components are already sourced from Taiwan. Taiwan's advantages in electronic components, software development, and other supply chains should be fully utilized. Moreover, Taiwan is an island, and its geographical environment is quite different from Ukraine, so Taiwan's situation can promote innovation in counter-drone systems, which is beneficial to the democratic camp.

Chen Kuo-ming, Interview Director of Global Defense Magazine, who participated in the closed-door meeting, told Central News Agency reporters that the meeting content demonstrated the threat of drones in modern warfare. The equipment developed by the foreign manufacturers participating in the meeting, from detection to jamming, provides troop protection in a soft-kill manner, offering defense solutions for individual soldiers, vehicles, and critical infrastructure. The concepts proposed by foreign manufacturers are worthy of reference by various sectors in Taiwan. (Edited by Lin Hsing-meng) 1150429
