Middle East War Key News

Central News Agency

(Central News Agency, Geneva 29th, comprehensive foreign report) The United Nations (UN) announced today that since the outbreak of the Middle East war, Iran has executed at least 21 people and arrested over 4,000.

According to AFP, the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) stated that since the joint US-Israeli airstrikes on Tehran at the end of February ignited the conflict, at least 9 people were executed for involvement in protests that shook the Iranian authorities in January, another 10 were executed for alleged participation in opposition organizations, and 2 were executed for espionage.

It is estimated that more than 4,000 people have been arrested on national security-related charges.

The OHCHR stated that many detainees were subjected to enforced disappearances, torture, or “cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment,” including forced confessions (sometimes even televised) and mock executions.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk stated in a statement: “I call on the Iranian authorities to halt all further executions, to impose a moratorium on the death penalty, to fully guarantee due process and fair trials, and to immediately release those arbitrarily detained.”

According to several human rights groups, including Amnesty International, Iran ranks second globally in the number of executions each year, trailing only China. (Translator: Kao Chao-fen/Editor: Liu Shu-chin) 1150429
