Pingtung Launches Cat Registration and Sterilization Program with Vouchers Starting May 1

Central News Agency (Reporter Li Hui-ting, Pingtung County, 29th) To strengthen source management of domestic cats and enhance animal welfare, the Pingtung County Government will launch a program starting May 1st, offering NT$500 convenience store vouchers to owners who complete pet registration and sterilization for their cats, thereby establishing a comprehensive pet management system.

The Ministry of Agriculture included cats in the list of pets that must be registered starting January 1, 2025, and granted cat owners a one-year grace period. Starting January 1, 2026, cats not registered will be fined between NT$3,000 and NT$15,000 in accordance with the Animal Protection Act. According to statistics from the Pingtung County Government, the estimated number of domestic cats in the county is 48,433, with a registration rate of 48.04% and a sterilization rate of 83.33%.

The County Government's Department of Agriculture stated in a press release today that to strengthen the source management of domestic cats and enhance animal welfare, it is launching the "Domestic Cat Registration and Sterilization Rewards" program. This encourages owners to complete pet registration and sterilization measures for their cats, enabling them to receive a NT$500 convenience store voucher, hoping to implement a comprehensive pet management system. The event will kick off on May 1st.

Cheng Yung-yu, Director of the Department of Agriculture, emphasized that promoting domestic cat registration and sterilization is an important policy for reducing stray animals and implementing owner responsibility. The subsidy adopts a "first apply, then issue" mechanism, with each owner limited to applying for one cat, through an online application form.
