(CNA reporter Chen Yun-yu, London, 28th) "Mountain Builders," a documentary film chronicling the development history of Taiwan's semiconductor industry, was screened at the British Parliament tonight. Taiwan's representative to the UK, Yao Chin-hsiang, told CNA that in the future, through screenings of "Mountain Builders" and a series of other activities, they aim to promote understanding among various sectors in the UK regarding the value of strengthening cooperation with Taiwan in the technology field.

Yao Chin-hsiang stated that Taiwan plays a key role in the development of the global high-tech industry, particularly in semiconductors and artificial intelligence (AI). As the UK pursues economic growth, it is necessary to cooperate with Taiwan, which can create more growth opportunities for the UK. Semiconductors, AI, robotics, and drones are just a few of the areas where Taiwan and the UK could further explore and strengthen cooperation.

The screening and networking reception for "Mountain Builders" were jointly organized by the British think tank "Council on Geostrategy" and the Taipei Representative Office in the UK. Attendees included British Members of Parliament, government officials, think tank experts, industry professionals, and foreign diplomats in the UK.

In his speech at the reception, Yao Chin-hsiang noted that some studies estimate that a military conflict in the Taiwan Strait could cause about a 10% loss of global GDP. This is why the UK, the US, the EU, Japan, and many other like-minded countries have repeatedly emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and opposing unilateral changes to the status quo.

At the same time, these like-minded countries are also strengthening cooperation with Taiwan, including in the semiconductor industry. For instance, the UK has sent large delegations to Taiwan's semiconductor exhibitions for three consecutive years, and Taiwan and the UK have held three semiconductor dialogues, demonstrating Taiwan's irreplaceable position in the global high-tech ecosystem.

Yao Chin-hsiang said that as a reliable partner, Taiwan can assist like-minded countries in eliminating national security risks in high-tech supply chains, and Taiwan and the UK can collaborate to build trustworthy international supply chains.

Gray Sergeant, Indo-Pacific Research Fellow at the "Council on Geostrategy," told CNA that "Mountain Builders" showcases not only the vision of a few individuals or the government but also the Taiwanese people's determination to control their own destiny, their strong will and resilience in the face of adversity, and their potential for innovation and leadership.

Henry Vickers, Software Director at MediaTek, a Taiwanese semiconductor company with a subsidiary in the UK, mentioned in his speech at the reception that the UK's innovation and design capabilities are outstanding, particularly in producing intellectual property (IP, i.e., silicon IP) in the semiconductor field. If the connection between IP and actual production applications can be further enhanced, market performance would be even better.

Vickers pointed out that the UK and Taiwan are natural partners, and Taiwan's manufacturing capabilities and the UK's IP advantages are complementary strengths. For example, 6G (sixth-generation) communication is expected to widely integrate AI, and Taiwan's chip production capability will undoubtedly be essential to meet this massive demand.

MediaTek's operations in the UK cover AI, satellite communication, and other areas.

"Mountain Builders" is scheduled for another screening in June, capitalizing on the buzz surrounding "London Tech Week" in mid-June. (Editor: Chen Hui-ping) 1150429
