Enhancing Drought Resilience: National Land Management Agency Says 16 Reclaimed Water Plants to Supply Over 500,000 Tons Daily Upon Completion
Taiwan's National Land Management Agency is advancing the development of reclaimed water plants to cope with extreme climate change. Seven facilities are currently operational, supplying over 190,000 tons of reclaimed water daily. Upon completion of all 16 facilities, over 500,000 tons per day will be supplied, contributing to stable water resources and a circular economy.

(Central News Agency reporter Kao Hua-chien, Taipei, 29th) The National Land Management Agency of the Ministry of Interior stated that due to the impact of extreme climate, preparations for drought resistance and flood prevention must be deployed in advance. Currently, the Executive Yuan has approved 16 reclaimed water plant projects, of which 7 have been completed, producing over 190,000 tons of reclaimed water daily for industrial water dispatch. There are 9 other projects in planning or under construction, and once all are completed, the total daily supply is expected to exceed 500,000 tons.
The National Land Management Agency stated in a press release today that among the 16 reclaimed water plant projects approved by the Executive Yuan, 7 plants have been built in Taoyuan, Taichung, Tainan, and Kaohsiung, with a daily reclaimed water production of over 190,000 tons. Reclaimed water is produced by re-treating wastewater, so it is not affected by rainfall fluctuations, enhancing the flexibility of domestic water resource allocation and supply resilience. When all 16 projects are completed in the future, the total daily supply is expected to exceed 500,000 tons, establishing a diversified water supply network.
The National Land Management Agency stated that since the promotion of the reclaimed water plan began in 2013, domestic sewage has been processed to produce high-quality reclaimed water resources for industrial use. Especially between 2021 and 2023, when rainfall was insufficient, the Fengshan and Linhai plants in Kaohsiung and the Yongkang and Anping plants in Tainan all timely demonstrated their advantages of 'not being affected by rainfall fluctuations' and 'stable water quality and quantity,' immediately expanding the production capacity of reclaimed water, reducing industry's reliance on tap water, and stabilizing domestic water use.
The National Land Management Agency stated that the world must face challenges such as sudden heavy rainfall causing disasters, droughts, and poor water conditions due to extreme climate. The central and local governments will work together to continue promoting the construction of rainwater and sewage pipelines, allowing domestic wastewater to be recycled and reused, establishing a stable and diversified water supply system, and implementing a circular economy. In addition, reclaimed water construction can improve the domestic reclaimed water supply network and expand the supply to industrial areas, comprehensively enhancing Taiwan's water supply resilience.
