(Chiayi County, April 29, Central News Agency reporter Tsai Chih-ming) The National Fire Agency facilitated a donation today from the US non-governmental organization SOA (Spirit of America) to Chiayi County's community emergency response teams, providing NT$550,000 worth of personal protective and rescue equipment to enhance grassroots disaster preparedness, demonstrating American civil society's support for Taiwan.
SOA's Taiwan representative arrived in Chiayi County this morning with the donated equipment, including first-aid kits, helmets, protective vests, gloves, and goggles. These items will be distributed by the Chiayi County Fire Department to 20 community emergency response teams in Chiayi County, aiming to help the people of Taiwan protect themselves and society from the impact of any natural or man-made disasters.
Chiayi County Fire Department Director Tsai Chien-an, when interviewed by the media, stated that Chiayi County is located in a high-risk area for natural disasters, facing threats from typhoons, heavy rains, and earthquakes. The first-line response capabilities of communities are therefore extremely important.
Tsai Chien-an expressed gratitude for the National Fire Agency's active coordination and SOA's attention to and substantial support for Chiayi County's disaster prevention work. He noted that this donation not only supplements basic equipment needs but also symbolizes international friendship and the shared concept of protecting people's safety.
Tsai Chien-an stated that in the future, they will continue to work closely with central government agencies to strengthen the training and equipment readiness of community emergency response teams, promote public-private cooperation and international exchanges, and comprehensively enhance the resilience of Chiayi County's disaster relief system to protect the lives and property of county residents.
The National Fire Agency stated that Chiayi County is a leader in Taiwan in building community emergency response capabilities; it hopes that through SOA's assistance and the joint participation of government and private forces, community disaster prevention awareness and training can be promoted to various counties, cities, and outlying islands, continuously improving the nation's defense capabilities.
