(Central News Agency reporter Zhao Jingyu Taipei 28th news) Swiss cellist Christian Poltéra will visit Taiwan with the famous Stradivarius instrument 'Mara' to perform all six of Bach's Cello Suites. Poltéra stated that this time he will present the complete scope of the suites, which he has been trying to showcase for many years.

Poltéra said that these suites are pieces he has been very familiar with since childhood, 'but perhaps too familiar, so much so that throughout my performing career, they never formed a clear, convincing outline in my mind. I have always been trying various ways of telling their story. It is only recently that the outline that feels close and comfortable to me has gradually taken shape.'

Born in Switzerland, Poltéra studied with the legendary German master Heinrich Schiff at the Salzburg and Vienna Music Academies. At the age of 17, he stepped in for cellist Yo-Yo Ma to perform Elgar's 'Cello Concerto' with the Tonhalle-Orchester Zürich conducted by David Zinman. Poltéra has received the Borletti-Buitoni Trust Award and has become one of the most acclaimed cellists of his generation.

According to press materials from Peng Bo Art, the 'Mara' in Poltéra's hands is a Stradivarius made in 1711. This was precisely the 'golden period' of Stradivari's instrument making, recognized for its most balanced tone, powerful projection, and peak craftsmanship and proportions of the instrument body.

Stradivari made nearly a thousand violins in his lifetime, but very few cellos. Approximately 60 exist today, most of which are held by museums or foundations, with very few actively played on concert stages. 'Mara' is one of them. Poltéra stated that this cello is 'both warm and clear,' and he felt 'deeply frustrated' when he first played it, 'until I learned to respect its unique timbre, and then gradually fell in love with its sound.'

The 'Meditator - Poltéra, Complete Bach Cello Suites' concert will be performed on May 3rd at the National Concert Hall in Taipei, and on May 5th at the Weiwuying National Kaohsiung Center for the Arts. (Editor: Zhang Mingkun) 1150428
