(Central News Agency reporter Cheng Wei-chen, Changhua, 28th) Lukang Dizangwang Temple, a historical monument designated by Changhua County, has long been affected by the erosion of time, with its painted murals showing fading and cracking. To preserve this precious cultural asset, the Changhua County Government undertook the restoration of the murals, with the project completed in January this year. The completion ceremony for the mural project was held today.
The construction of the Lukang Dizangwang Temple mural project began with a groundbreaking ceremony in July 2024 and was completed in January this year. The Changhua County Government held the completion ceremony for the mural project today, attended by County Magistrate Wang Hui-mei, DPP Legislator Chen Hsiu-pao, and Lukang Dizangwang Temple Chairman Hsu Sen-shu, among others.
Wang Hui-mei stated that Dizangwang Temple was founded in 1815, built with surplus funds from the reconstruction of Tianhou Temple by Lukang's Eight Guilds, forming Lukang's unique religious pattern of "North Tianhou, South Dizang," symbolizing one deity overseeing heaven and another guarding the earth to protect the community. It was designated as a county-level historical monument in 1985. The Ministry of Culture's Bureau of Cultural Heritage approved a total budget of NT$11.95 million, with the central government subsidizing 70% of the funds. With additional self-raised funds from the county government and the temple, public and private sectors collaborated to jointly protect the cultural asset.
Wang Hui-mei added that the restoration work was meticulous, specifically preserving murals damaged by smoke. Professional restorers collaborated with local artisans to successfully complete the project. For the repainting of the door gods, the original artist Pan Yue-xiong worked with his disciple Lin Chuan-chih, embodying generational inheritance and the continuation of craftsmanship.
The Bureau of Cultural Affairs pointed out that calligraphy art was also incorporated into this project. The temple invited six renowned local calligraphers—Wu Chao-fan, Wu Chao-chang, Wu Chao-hsun, Lin Chun-chen, Chen Meng-yi, and Chen Chao-kun—to inscribe their works on the temple's beams and walls. Four of them had previously participated in inscriptions for historical monument restorations and reunited this time to wield their brushes, continuing the cultural lineage of restoration and adding artistic imprints that transcend time. The public is invited to appreciate the beauty of traditional murals and calligraphy art up close. (Edited by Chen Ren-hua) 1150428
