CNA News, Keelung, April 28. The Keelung City Government has completed a NT$20.14 million renovation of the Zhengbin Elementary School kitchen. The project not only solved persistent leaking and ventilation problems but also added air conditioning, drastically improving the environment for staff.

The Keelung Education Department stated today that the kitchen serves about 500 people but previously suffered from leaks, poorly sealed windows, structural cracks, and inadequate ventilation. Old equipment also leaked steam and suffered from rust. The renovation, which began last summer after six months of planning, included structural reinforcement, updated flooring, and new equipment like exhaust hoods and air conditioners. The kitchen resumed operations in February.

Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang emphasized the city's commitment to school lunch quality, noting that improvements cover regulations, management, contracts, and personnel benefits. Education Director Xu Yan-li added that modernizing the kitchen enhances food safety and prevents occupational hazards like heat exhaustion for kitchen workers. The city plans to continue allocating funds to renovate kitchens in other schools.
