Indonesia Train Collision Rises to 14 Dead, 84 Injured; All Fatalities are Women

(Central News Agency, Jakarta, 28th, comprehensive foreign reports) The total number of fatalities in a train collision near Jakarta, Indonesia, has climbed to 14, with 84 others injured. Authorities stated today that the women-only carriage of the commuter train sustained the most severe damage, and search and rescue operations for survivors have been completed.

Reuters and Agence France-Presse reported that the accident, involving a commuter train and a long-distance train, occurred late last night in Bekasi, on the outskirts of Jakarta.

PT KAI (Indonesian Railway Company) and Jakarta police stated that the commuter train first collided with a taxi stopped on the tracks, and was then struck by the long-distance train. The most severe damage was to the last carriage of the commuter train, which was exclusively for women passengers.

An official from the state-owned PT KAI stated that the death toll has risen to 14.

Mohammad Syafii, head of the National Search and Rescue Agency of Indonesia, stated that all fatalities were women, most of whom were trapped under the deformed carriages. He described the rescue process as extremely difficult, requiring personnel with special skills for precise extrication operations.

He said, "By this morning... all operations have concluded. I can confirm that there are no other trapped individuals at the scene."
