Former Ally Becomes Court Foe: Musk Accuses OpenAI of Becoming a For-Profit Tool

OAKLAND (Central News Agency) – Tesla CEO Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman faced each other in a California federal court today. This highly anticipated trial could have a profound impact on the AI industry and potentially force OpenAI to significantly restructure its business model.

According to AFP, this legal confrontation unfolding across the San Francisco Bay Area is widely seen as a battle of egos. The world's richest man, Elon Musk, is taking on OpenAI, a company he once strongly supported but which has now surpassed him in the AI boom.

The core of the case lies in Musk's accusation that Sam Altman pushed OpenAI to become an industry giant, attempting to challenge the profit positions of major tech companies like Google, Apple, and Microsoft, and that this move has deviated from its original non-profit mission.

Musk argues in the lawsuit that he was misled into believing OpenAI's purpose was altruistic.

Musk's lawyer, Steven Molo, stated to the court before OpenAI and Microsoft's lawyers spoke: "We are here today because the defendant in this case stole a charity."

Molo argued that OpenAI "no longer operates for the benefit of all humanity" but has become "a for-profit enterprise run for the benefit of OpenAI and its largest investor, Microsoft."

The feud dates back to 2015, when Altman convinced Musk to co-found OpenAI, promising it would be a non-profit lab whose technology would "belong to the world."

Musk invested at least $38 million at the time, but the two officially parted ways in 2018, and the following year, the OpenAI Foundation established its commercial subsidiary.
