Forestry Bureau teams up with residents and students to naturally create moist habitats for land crabs

The Taichung Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency collaborated with local residents and university students to create a 100-meter moist habitat for land crabs in Gaobei Fanziliao Protected Forest, Qingshui District, Taichung City, using natural methods. (Central News Agency reporter Zhao Lirong, Taichung, 28th) The Taichung Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency recently teamed up with local residents, students from Tunghai and Providence Universities, among others, to go to Gaobei Fanziliao Protected Forest in Qingshui District, Taichung City, and create a 100-meter livable, diverse habitat for land crabs using natural, handmade methods.

As the summer breeding season approaches, land crabs around the Dajia River estuary will usher in a time of life renewal. The Taichung Branch of the Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency today issued a press release stating that on April 25th and 26th, in collaboration with Tunghai University's Ecology and Environment Research Center, Wilderness Protection Association Taichung Branch, Gaobei community residents, and students from Tunghai and Providence Universities, a total of 96 person-times participated in creating a 100-meter livable, diverse habitat for land crabs using natural, handmade methods in Gaobei Fanziliao Protected Forest.

Gaobei Fanziliao Protected Forest is located on the south bank of the Dajia River estuary and possesses precious springs and low-lying wetlands, making it an important node in the "Taichung Coastal Wetland Conservation Axis" of the national ecological green network. More than 10 species of land crabs have been recorded here, including the Red-clawed Mangrove Crab, Japanese Mitten Crab, and Macrophthalmus tomentosus.

Every year from May to October, during the breeding season, adult land crabs will depart from the coastal forest, cross the sea dike, and reach the sea to release their larvae; after the larvae in the sea develop into juvenile crabs, they will climb back to the coastal forest to live and grow.

Gaobei Fanziliao Protected Forest is an important dwelling place for Gaomei land crabs. Although land crabs are capable of activity away from water, most species are highly dependent on water sources and environmental humidity, and their habitats are often close to water bodies.

Unlike traditional cement engineering, adults and children used their hands and shovels to dig shallow ditches. In the spring water diversion area, ditches were dug along the dense forest undergrowth to guide natural spring water to a ditch 65 meters away, effectively expanding the coverage of stable water sources. In the rainwater retention area, linear and branching shallow ditches were dug to enhance the water retention effect after rainfall and maintain the humidity of the protected forest.

Everyone worked together to create a 100-meter handmade waterway, transforming the formerly dry forest into a moist one, allowing land crabs that prefer humid environments to successfully penetrate and inhabit the protected forest. It is hoped that through continuous ecological monitoring and habitat optimization, Gaobei Fanziliao Protected Forest will become a comprehensive ecological green network with biodiversity, wetland restoration, and water regulation functions.
