Disaster Prevention and Relief Exercise: Mataan River Temporary Bridge in Hualien to be Closed on April 30th Afternoon

Hualien County, April 28 (CNA reporter Lee Hsien-feng) — To enhance disaster response capabilities and ensure the safety of people's lives and property, the Hualien County Government will hold a landslide dam disaster prevention and relief exercise in the border area of Guangfu and Fenglin on the afternoon of April 30th. During the exercise, the "Mataan River Temporary Bridge" will be fully closed and controlled. Residents are requested to plan their itineraries in advance and cooperate with traffic guidance. To make the exercise as realistic as possible and to implement the procedures for various agencies to enter and exit during a disaster, the county government has issued official documents to public units, schools, and businesses within the affected area. Personnel and faculty who need to participate or are affected by the exercise environment will be granted official leave according to law, to ensure that each unit can focus on disaster prevention and relief tasks and enhance regional disaster resilience. The Hualien County Government stated that the landslide dam disaster exercise is an important part of ensuring the safety of lives and property of residents along the river. The temporary inconvenience caused by road closures and controls is for the sake of long-term high vigilance and disaster preparedness. Residents are asked for their understanding and cooperation. The control period is from 1:30 PM to 4:00 PM on April 30th. The controlled road section is the Mataan River Temporary Bridge (fully closed and prohibited to pass). During the control period, people and vehicles will be temporarily restricted from entering the Guangfu Township alert zone. To ensure smooth traffic during the exercise, it is recommended that northbound and southbound citizens bypass the controlled area via alternative routes. In addition, Guangfu Train Station is within the alert zone of the exercise. To ensure the completeness of the exercise procedures, passengers disembarking between 1:30 PM and 4:00 PM that afternoon are requested to cooperate with Taiwan Railways personnel to evacuate vertically to the second floor of the station building until the exercise ends. Considering that the area around the station will be controlled during the exercise, if your itinerary is tight, it is recommended to avoid it to prevent delays. The Hualien County Government explained that during the exercise, to test the efficiency of alarm transmission and promote the identification of alarm sounds, there will be warning measures, including disaster prevention cell phone text messages (disaster prevention warning text messages will be sent to certain areas in Guangfu Township, Fenglin Township, and Wanrong Township.
