(Central News Agency, Bamako, 26th, Comprehensive Foreign Report) Mali's military junta today faces a major security crisis. Following a combined attack by jihadist and separatist rebels across the country over the weekend, Defense Minister Camara was killed, and a key northern town is reportedly in the hands of the rebels.

Agence France-Presse reported that junta leader Assimi Goita has not appeared publicly or issued a statement since the attack occurred early yesterday morning.

The two groups that launched coordinated attacks across the country are the Tuareg rebels allied with the "Azawad Liberation Front" (FLA), and the jihadists of the "Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims" (JNIM).

Analysts point out that this is the biggest challenge faced by the Malian ruling authorities since March 2012. At that time, an offensive was repelled with the intervention of French forces, which have since withdrawn.

The death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara yesterday was a major blow to the authorities. Government soldiers are still fighting in some areas.

According to an official and Camara's family, Camara himself, his wife, and two grandchildren died after his residence was attacked by a car bomb. His residence is located in Kati, a military stronghold on the outskirts of the capital, Bamako.

Today, the military junta issued a statement stating that Camara was wounded in a firefight with attackers and later died of his injuries in the hospital. "He successfully killed some of the perpetrators," and he will be given a solemn state funeral for his sacrifice for the country.

Fighting is still ongoing in multiple locations today, including Kati, the northern towns of Kidal, Gao, and Sevare in the central region. (Editor: Ji Jin-ling) 1150427
