(Chiayi City, April 27, CNA reporter Huang Kuo-fang) In October last year, an 80-year-old man surnamed Jiang in Chiayi County was riding a motorcycle with his wife, surnamed Huang, when he made a sudden U-turn on County Road 99 in Dalin Township. His motorcycle collided with an oncoming motorcycle ridden by a woman surnamed Peng, resulting in the death of Ms. Huang. Since both the elderly man and Ms. Peng were found to be at fault, the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office has indicted them on charges of negligent homicide.
According to the indictment from the Chiayi District Prosecutors Office, the elderly man surnamed Jiang was riding a motorcycle with his wife, surnamed Huang, on the evening of October 20 last year. As they traveled near the 3-kilometer mark of County Road 99 in San Village, Dalin Township, he made a sudden U-turn into the opposite lane. Unexpectedly, he collided with a motorcycle ridden by Ms. Peng, who was traveling straight in the opposite direction. All three were injured and sent to the hospital, and Ms. Huang later died due to severe injuries.
The Chiayi District Prosecutors Office stated that according to the vehicle accident assessment, when the elderly man made a left U-turn to cross to the opposite road, he neither signaled left nor paused to check for oncoming traffic, which was the primary cause of the accident. Ms. Peng's motorcycle was traveling at approximately 81 kilometers per hour (the speed limit for the section was 50 kilometers per hour), leading to her inability to brake or swerve in time due to speeding, which was a secondary cause of the accident.
The Chiayi District Prosecutors Office said that since both the elderly man surnamed Jiang and Ms. Peng were involved and bore responsibility for the accident, both were indicted on charges including negligent homicide. (Editor: Wu Su-jou) 1150427
