Blue House: Google to Build World's First AI Campus in South Korea

(CNA, Seoul, 27th) South Korean Presidential Policy Chief Kim Yong-beom stated today that South Korea and Google have reached an agreement to build an AI campus in Seoul. This will facilitate collaboration between Google and Korean engineers and startups, marking Google's first such AI campus globally. Reuters reported that South Korean President Lee Jae-myung met with Demis Hassabis, CEO of Google's research arm DeepMind, in Seoul. The Ministry of Science and Google signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) for the campus. Hassabis noted that DeepMind hopes to deepen partnerships with Korean firms, including Samsung, SK Hynix, Hyundai's Boston Dynamics, and LG Group, to 'drive new joint initiatives.' He emphasized his desire to help cultivate the next generation of talent through internships and training at the center. Hassabis recalled the AlphaGo match against Lee Sedol in Korea a decade ago as the beginning of the modern AI era. Additionally, South Korea requested Google to dispatch at least 10 engineers from its US headquarters to the campus, which Hassabis said he would consider.
