US 250th Anniversary: Writer Calls for Official Language to be Renamed 'American'

NEW YORK (CNA) – As the United States prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary this July, writer Rob Lockwood has recommended that President Trump change the name of the official U.S. language to 'American,' moving away from terms like 'English' or 'American English.'

According to Fox News, Lockwood, a former staffer for current Interior Secretary Doug Burgum, wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post calling for the U.S. to adopt its own language name. He discussed his proposal on 'Fox and Friends' yesterday.

'Enough is enough; let's stop calling it English or American English. Let's just call it American,' Lockwood said.

He stated that Trump has the ability to decouple America from British Standard English, arguing that although the U.S. declared independence two and a half centuries ago, its language remains tied to its past. Lockwood emphasized that the U.S. has long since developed its own version of the language, which should be formally recognized.

President Trump has not shied away from linguistic changes in his second term. In March 2025, he signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, a move intended to unite the nation. This follows other renaming actions, such as changing the 'Gulf of Mexico' to the 'Gulf of America' in January 2025.
