Taipei (CNA) — President Lai Ching-te expressed concern today via social media platform X regarding the suspected gunshots reported while U.S. President Donald Trump was attending the White House Correspondents' Association dinner in Washington. Lai strongly condemned any form of political violence.

Following reports of gunshots near the Washington Hilton Hotel, President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump were emergency evacuated, leading to a period of chaos. Trump later posted that the Secret Service and law enforcement acted heroically and that the shooter had been arrested.

President Lai stated he was shocked and deeply concerned by the incident at the dinner. He expressed relief that President Trump and other participants were unharmed and emphasized his firm opposition to political violence in all its forms.
