(Central News Agency reporter Lin Shang-ying, Berlin, 26th) Streaming platform Netflix has acquired authorization to adapt the classic German board game 'Catan' into a TV series or variety show, attracting significant attention. German media has published reports introducing how this 30-year-old game evolved from a dental technician's after-work hobby into a global brand with tens of millions of units sold.

Handelsblatt reported on the 24th that 'Catan' is one of the world's most successful board games, with cumulative sales exceeding 45 million units, distributed in over 100 countries and 45 languages, and boasting a complete system including world championships.

'Catan' still sells approximately 3 million units annually and has long been a top performer in the German and global board game markets. It is considered a classic board game second only to 'Monopoly' in popularity. Late last year, Netflix announced it had acquired the rights to adapt this board game for film and television.

According to Handelsblatt, the game's creation stemmed from an unexpected life turn for its late creator, Klaus Teuber. Teuber originally worked as a dental technician, taking over his family's denture business, but faced operational difficulties due to changes in Germany's health insurance system regarding denture payments.

To relieve stress, he designed board games at home after work, initially as a hobby. In 1988, his first work won the German 'Game of the Year' award, gradually opening his path to creation.

'Catan,' launched in 1995, is set on a fictional island. Players acquire resources by rolling dice, engage in trading, and build roads and cities, combining strategy, luck, and negotiation mechanics.

Despite being rejected by several publishers initially, it was eventually released on a small scale by German publisher Kosmos and quickly became a market sensation. Not only did Teuber win 'Game of the Year' again, but sales continued to grow over the long term, breaking the industry norm that board games usually peak upon release.

Handelsblatt analyzed that the game's success lies in its balanced design: the uncertainty brought by dice reduces frustration for beginners while maintaining strategic depth; players can trade resources to enhance interaction, and through the 'robber' mechanism and alliances, they can check leading players, preventing a single player from dominating. Continuous releases of new maps and expansion packs further extend the product's lifespan.

As sales expanded, Teuber eventually resigned from his main job to dedicate himself full-time to game design. 'Catan' not only freed him from financial pressure but also established a board game brand system spanning publishing, competitions, and licensing. In 2002, he officially founded a company with his two sons to manage the brand and licensing business, laying the foundation for subsequent commercialization.

Klaus Teuber passed away in April 2023. His second son, Benjamin Teuber, who is now responsible for game development, expressed regret in an interview about losing a 'creative partner.' He stated that they would continue his father's spirit of game design, releasing new versions of 'Catan' and game expansions, while strictly controlling licensed content.

Benjamin stated that future adaptations would avoid overemphasizing war and destruction, maintaining the game's core spirit of 'construction and cooperation.' He emphasized that the team retains a high degree of control over brand content and can veto licensing collaborations that do not align with their philosophy if necessary. In recent years, he has also attempted to incorporate contemporary issues such as energy transition into game design, expanding content depth.

Although the 'Catan Universe' is expected to expand further with its visual adaptation, this company, which is one of the few founded and long-operated around a single board game, is not large in actual scale, currently consisting only of the Teuber brothers and three remote-working employees.
