The forest fire in Otsuchi Town, Iwate Prefecture, continues to burn for its fifth day. Media reports describe a strong smell of burnt wood and ash filling the air. As of 6 AM today, authorities estimate the burned area at 1,373 hectares across the Kozuchi and Kirikiri districts. Over 1,000 personnel, including fire departments from outside the prefecture and the Self-Defense Forces, are fighting the flames from both land and air. Structural damage to homes and warehouses has been confirmed in some areas. Residents in nearby Kamaishi City are struggling to dry laundry due to falling ash, leading to crowded laundromats. Local officials have advised citizens to wear masks due to reports of eye irritation and breathing difficulties.
