(Taipei, CNA reporter Wang Hsin-yi, April 26) Ambassador-at-Large Audrey Tang was invited to speak at the Central News Agency's 9th 'I am an Overseas Correspondent' Northern Training Camp today, discussing the impact of AI on news. Tang believes that artificial intelligence should be 'Civic AI' and should not become a 'self-fulfilling prophecy.'

The 'I am an Overseas Correspondent' Northern Training Camp entered its second day today, with Audrey Tang addressing the AI trend under the theme 'Initial Exploration of Civic AI (Civic.AI).' She transformed 'artificial intelligence' into 'Civic AI' to open her discussion, believing that news is not content production, but rather the transformation of on-site reality into something public can understand, trust, and jointly respond to.

Tang cited Central News Agency President Hu Wan-ling's question from yesterday, 'Can AI replace news work? Yes, and no,' arguing that future correspondents should not only bring the world back to Taiwan but also spread local experiences to the world.

Tang used examples from several years ago to discuss how AI enters life, such as social platforms pushing content users are interested in through algorithms. This 'tailor-made' approach leads to opinion polarization and populism.

She stated that AI is like a 'wildfire,' similar to how algorithms use 'anger,' making users addicted to junk food. However, a different perspective should be to transform the 'wildfire' into a 'campfire,' not to extinguish it, but to reform it.

Tang believes that artificial intelligence is human-made intelligence, and 'Civic AI' incorporates the virtue of caring for others, allowing users to consider whether to have a benevolent heart or to be rich and unkind.

Audrey Tang stated that some people believe AI will replace humans, but this should not become a self-fulfilling prophecy. One should 'resist those arbitrary languages,' just as a weather forecast predicts rain tomorrow, but clouds and rain cannot be controlled. If AI determines that someone has a high financial risk and a bank chooses not to grant a loan, leading to financial crisis because this person cannot apply for a loan, this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. 'Humans being replaced by AI are not inevitable.'

Tang emphasized that uncertainty is good news. 'The future has not yet been written; the people writing it are in this room.' Correspondents can transmit Taiwan's experiences to the world, and how to transform the on-site reality into a credible truth is even more the work of correspondents.

Today's courses included Central News Agency Media Lab Director Sung Yu-tai discussing 'The Future of Media,' Central News Agency Political and Economic News Center Chief Editor Wan Shu-chang discussing 'Sustainability,' and Central News Agency Vice President and Editor-in-Chief Chen Cheng-chieh discussing 'Media Literacy.'

The Central Training Camp will be held on May 9-10 at Chunghwa Telecom Institute's Taichung Liming Hall, and the Southern Training Camp will take place on May 23-24 at Kaohsiung City's Grand Hi-Lai Hotel. Participants will undergo primary selection for internship qualifications through the training, with the chance to intern at Central News Agency, and selected 'little correspondents' can intern abroad for one month. Registrations are still open.

The 'I am an Overseas Correspondent' series of activities is guided by the Ministry of Culture and supported by Chunghwa Telecom Co., Ltd., CTBC Bank, First Commercial Bank, Ever Rich Duty Free Shop, Mega Bank, and Mega Bank Cultural and Educational Foundation. (Edited by Huang Ming-hsi) 1150426
