(Central News Agency reporter Lin Chang-shun, Taipei, 25th) A man surnamed Li attacked a 3-year-old Filipino girl without provocation in the Taipei Main Station lobby today. The Railway Police Bureau immediately arrested Li and sent him for investigation on suspicion of attempted murder. After questioning by prosecutors at the Taipei District Prosecutors Office, Li was ordered detained this evening.
The Railway Police Bureau Taipei Branch stated that at 2:25 PM, they received a report of a person being pushed and assaulted in the first-floor lobby of Taipei Main Station. After questioning multiple witnesses who saw the incident, they confirmed that the assailant was a man surnamed Li wearing a striped shirt. Police later arrested Li outside the west exit of Taipei Main Station.
The Railway Police Bureau stated that surveillance footage confirmed the 40-year-old man surnamed Li kicked the girl in the abdomen. The girl had swelling on her cheeks and limbs and has been sent to National Taiwan University Hospital for treatment.
Li initially confessed that he targeted the girl because he was unhappy with her noisiness and the sounds she was making at the scene. After police questioning, Li was transferred to the Taipei District Prosecutors Office for investigation on suspicion of attempted murder, and prosecutors recommended preventive detention.
After questioning, prosecutors determined that Li was suspected of assault, that the criminal suspicion was significant, and that there were facts sufficient to believe there was a risk of repeated offenses and flight. They therefore sought his detention from the court this evening. (Edited by Lung Po-an) 1150425
