Cold Chain, Automated Sorting Boost Kaohsiung Dashu Lychee Farmers to Export 100 Tons
Kaohsiung farmers are exporting over 100 tons of Jade Lychees annually to Japan and Hong Kong, thanks to the adoption of cold chain technology and automated sorting machines. This initiative helps to overcome challenges posed by extreme weather, ensuring a stable supply of high-quality "King Grade" lychees.

(Central News Agency reporter Lin Qiaolian, Kaohsiung, April 25) Kaohsiung City is the largest production area for Jade Lychees in Taiwan, with peak production from late May to early June each year. Kaohsiung farmers, through cold chain technology and automated sorting, have launched "King Grade" lychees with a diameter of 36mm or more, successfully exporting them to Japan and Hong Kong, with annual sales exceeding 100 metric tons.
Jade Lychee gets its name from its purse-like shape and jade-like flesh, offering a sweet and sour taste, small pit, and firm, chewy flesh. Kaohsiung City is the largest production area for Jade Lychees nationwide, with peak production in late May and early June each year.
Zhang Qingquan, a farmer from Dashu District, Kaohsiung City, stated that May marks the harvest season for Dashu's special Jade Lychees in Kaohsiung. Despite the impact of extreme weather this year, the harvest period is only a short 14 days, and the fruits are easily damaged. In recent years, breakthroughs have been made in overcoming weather limitations through cold chain technology and automated sorting, leading to the launch of "King Grade" Jade Lychees, which have been successfully exported overseas.
Zhang Qingquan, who founded the brand "Old Zhang Fruit," said that this year, new technology was introduced, pioneering "differential pressure pre-cooling" equipment. This equipment rapidly lowers the core temperature of the fruits after harvesting to lock in freshness, and combined with electrolytic water purification treatment, effectively extends the shelf life. This overcomes the pain points of traditional agriculture, which is reliant on nature and difficult to store.
In addition to improved preservation technology, Zhang Qingquan also introduced an automated rolling sorting machine of export-to-Japan grade, replacing traditional manual screening. Operators state that in the past, Jade Lychees were mostly sold in bunches or loose fruits, making it difficult to standardize specifications. Now, through precise sorting, high-quality fruits with a diameter of 36mm or more are selected, with their plump and juicy "bursting" taste entering the high-end gift market.
To ensure the cold chain's "last mile" remains unbroken, Zhang Qingquan cooperates with logistics providers to set up temporary stations within the packaging plant. After packaging, the fruits are immediately sent to cold chain logistics vehicles. He stated that this scientific management process has improved supply stability, making it the top seller on major domestic e-commerce platforms for several consecutive years, and also breaking through the stringent export inspection standards.
