(Central News Agency reporter Liao Wen-chi, Taipei, 25th) Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairman Chiu Chui-cheng today attended the opening ceremony of the Abe Political-Economic Academy at National Chengchi University, stating that Taiwan has become a crucial player in the concept of a "Free and Open Indo-Pacific." Facing complex pressures from the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), Taiwan will continue to strengthen its self-defense to contribute to regional peace and stability.

Chiu Chui-cheng attended the opening ceremony of the first Abe Political-Economic Academy at the National Chengchi University Abe Shinzo Research Center today. In his speech, he stated that the "Free and Open Indo-Pacific" concept, proposed by former Japanese Prime Minister Abe in 2016, advocated for building an Indo-Pacific region free from threats of force, emphasizing freedom, rule of law, diversity, inclusivity, and openness.

He also highly praised Abe's successful leadership in the "Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership" (CPTPP), which now has 12 member countries and accounts for 14.4% of global GDP, making it a high-standard, high-quality free trade zone. These two achievements fully demonstrate Abe's excellent planning, influence, and leadership, which are his most celebrated strategic legacies.

Chiu Chui-cheng pointed out that in the face of military expansion by authoritarian regimes such as China, Russia, and North Korea in the Indo-Pacific region, challenging the rules-based international order, Taiwan has become a crucial player in the concept of a free and open Indo-Pacific region in terms of geopolitics, global trade and technology, and democratic values.

He said that Abe's assertion that "a Taiwan contingency is a Japan contingency, and a Japan contingency is a U.S.-Japan security alliance contingency" deeply highlighted the interdependent geopolitical reality between Taiwan and Japan, and also demonstrated a firm determination to safeguard regional peace.

Chiu Chui-cheng also mentioned that the CCP's increasingly severe complex pressures are the main source of current cross-strait tensions and risks in the Taiwan Strait. As Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi (Note: This might be a hypothetical or misidentified reference as Sanae Takaichi is not the current Prime Minister) stated, her remarks on "a Taiwan contingency" also faced strong complex pressures from the CCP. Faced with this situation, Taiwan, along with responsible countries in the Indo-Pacific region including Japan, must calmly respond to the changing security situation, enhance self-defense capabilities, and jointly contribute to regional peace and stability.
