Bloomberg Interview: Francois Wu Aims to Prevent Taiwan from Becoming a Bargaining Chip in Trump-Xi Meeting

In an interview with Bloomberg, Taiwan's Deputy Foreign Minister Francois Wu stated that Taiwan is working to prevent the island's security from becoming a bargaining chip when Trump meets Xi Jinping. 'Our biggest concern is putting the Taiwan issue on the negotiation table,' Wu said. The meeting, scheduled for May 14-15 in Beijing, is expected to cover trade deals. Wu noted that Xi might urge Trump to oppose Taiwan independence, which would be a major victory for Beijing. Although the White House says its 'One China' policy is unchanged, Wu warned that 'nothing is 100% certain.' Taiwan is seeking to expand shared interests with the US, specifically in the semiconductor industry and through large investments, to ensure Taiwan remains indispensable.
