(CNA Reporter Lin Hsing-chien, Manila 24th) Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and his wife are scheduled to visit Japan in the last week of May, aiming to deepen the strategic partnership as the two countries commemorate the 70th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations.

The Presidential Communications Office (PCO) of the Philippines announced today that President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos, at the invitation of the Japanese government, will make a state visit to Japan from May 26 to 29.

According to the itinerary released by the PCO, Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako will receive the Marcos couple at the Imperial Palace and host a state banquet.

President Marcos Jr. will also hold a summit meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, focusing on the future direction of the Philippine-Japan 'Strengthened Strategic Partnership', while discussing the current developments in the international situation, especially concerning energy, food security, and regional maritime security.

Marcos Jr. will also meet with Japanese business leaders and the Filipino community in Japan to strengthen economic and trade exchanges and show concern for the living conditions of the expats.

The Philippines and Japan restored diplomatic relations in 1956, and this year marks the 70th anniversary. The two countries established a 'Strategic Partnership' in 2011, which was deepened into a 'Strengthened Strategic Partnership' in 2015. Facing common maritime challenges, they have been enhancing cooperation year by year in areas such as infrastructure, maritime security, and defense.

In April 2023, Japan launched the 'Official Security Assistance' (OSA) framework, with the Philippines being one of the first beneficiary countries. Last year, the parliaments of both countries approved the 'Reciprocal Access Agreement' (RAA), and this year, the Japan Self-Defense Forces directly participated in multiple joint military exercises between the Philippines and the United States for the first time.

Japan recently revised its 'Three Principles on Transfer of Defense Equipment and Technology' and its operational guidelines, possibly transferring several used Abukuma-class frigates with anti-submarine capabilities to the Philippines. (Editor: Chen Yen-chun) 1150424
