Major News on Middle East Conflict
(CNA, Washington, 23rd, Comprehensive Foreign Report) Lebanon and Israel will hold a second round of US-brokered talks today, and US President Donald Trump is expected to receive the envoys from both countries at the White House. The Lebanese side will seek to extend the ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese militant group "Hezbollah."
According to Reuters, following talks in Washington last week, the ambassadors of Lebanon and Israel to the US reached a ceasefire agreement, which is originally scheduled to expire on the 26th.
This ceasefire has led to a significant reduction in violence, although attacks continue to occur in southern Lebanon. Just a day before the talks, an Israeli airstrike killed at least five people, including a journalist.
Israeli forces have occupied a self-declared buffer zone in southern Lebanon. The Iran-backed Lebanese Hezbollah, on the other hand, stated that they have the "right to resist" the occupying forces.
A US official revealed that today's talks were originally scheduled to be hosted by the State Department but will now be moved to the White House, where President Donald Trump will personally receive the two ambassadors upon their arrival.
Another source briefed on the matter said this indicates that the talks are highly valued and prioritized, and believes there is optimism that progress can be made.
Lebanese President Joseph Aoun stated today that Lebanon's ambassador to the US, Nada Moawad, will strive to extend the ceasefire agreement and demand that Israel halt its demolition of houses in southern Lebanese villages. (Translated by: Yang Zhaoyan) 1150424
