(CNA, Taipei, 23rd) The Executive Yuan announced that in response to the oil price spike caused by the Middle East conflict, a fuel subsidy of up to NT$6,000 will be provided to taxis. Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai stated that he hopes taxi drivers will actually feel this support. In response, taxi drivers pointed out that the subsidy measure reduces cost pressures and helps the industry a lot.

Due to the rising oil prices caused by the Middle East situation, the Executive Yuan stated today that taxis are an important part of the public transportation system. Starting in May, a fuel subsidy project will be launched for the 90,000 legally registered taxis. Excluding pure electric vehicles, the fuel subsidy will be up to NT$6,000, and an expansion of the subsidy will be considered depending on future developments.

According to the reference retail prices of Formosa Plastics franchised gas stations, 92 unleaded gasoline is NT$32.4 per liter, 95+ unleaded gasoline is NT$33.9 per liter, 98 unleaded gasoline is NT$35.9 per liter, and premium diesel is NT$30.8 per liter.

Transportation Minister Chen Shih-kai pointed out at a press conference this afternoon that regarding the overall public transportation assistance plan, CPC Corporation has been asked to help with aviation fuel so that domestic flight tickets will not be increased. Budgets will be allocated to reimburse this in the future. Ticket price subsidies for highway passenger transport and ships are expected to start in May, with an estimated 3 months of assistance, which will be reviewed based on the war situation.

Chen Shih-kai said that the transportation industry is hit hardest by soaring oil prices. Rail transport uses electricity, and he thanked Taipower for its help in not raising electricity rates. Taxis are the segment that feels it the most, so subsidy measures are introduced with the hope that taxi drivers will feel it immediately: "Drivers, keep going, the Ministry of Transportation supports you."

Chen Shih-kai mentioned that this time the subsidy is via the CPC card. Currently, there are 90,000 taxis across Taiwan, among which 50,000 have a CPC card. Drivers who already have a CPC card can bring it to CPC to register their license plate number starting from May 20, and NT$6,000 will be stored on the card, valid until the end of the year. Those without a CPC card can apply for one at a nearby CPC station, and after completion, they can receive the subsidy, giving drivers immediate help.

Chen Shih-kai stated that since oil prices are still fluctuating, rolling reviews will be conducted. Currently, plans for taxis, highway buses, and domestic flights are all based on a 3-month assistance period.

Li Wei-er, Chairman of the Taiwan Digital Platform Reservation Transportation Practitioners Industrial Union, said that for a full-time driver, a hybrid car can run 15 kilometers on 1 liter of gas on average, while a pure gas car runs 8 to 10 kilometers. For a full-time driver, the subsidy proposed this time equals an allowance for about 60 to 70 days.

Li Wei-er said that before the oil price increase, gas accounted for 15% to 18% of a driver's costs. Based on current prices, it has risen to 20% to 25%. A subsidy of NT$5 per liter eases the pressure on drivers a bit, and he gives this great affirmation.

Cheng Li-chia, Chairman of the National Federation of Automobile Transport Drivers Trade Unions, R.O.C., said that a full-time driver fills up about 400 liters of gas a month. The NT$1,200 (Note: should be 1200 liters worth of subsidy logic, translating as is) fuel subsidy provided this time can be used until the end of the year, giving drivers flexibility, which is of great help to the industry. He affirmed the Ministry of Transportation and urged drivers to use it carefully. (Editor: Wu Su-jou) 1150423
