(CNA Reporter Chen Yu-ting, Taipei, 23rd) The Taipei MRT Xinyi Line Eastern Extension is entering the final countdown to opening. The Department of Rapid Transit Systems (DORTS) stated today that construction progress has reached 90%, and it plans to submit the project to the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) for inspection in June. It could open as early as late June, and a one-month free ride period is likely being planned for the trial operation.

The Taipei MRT Xinyi Line Eastern Extension continues from the tail track of Xiangshan Station, extending eastward along Section 6 of Xinyi Road to the Guangci Care Park, adding a new terminal, 'Guangci/Fengtian Temple Station'. With a total length of about 1.4 kilometers, construction began in October 2016. The city government's original goal was to open in the first quarter of this year.

The Taipei City DORTS presented a work report to the City Council's Transportation Committee today. Regarding the current status of lines under construction, as of the end of March, the construction progress of the Xinyi Line Eastern Extension has reached 90.6%. It is expected to be submitted to the MOTC for inspection in June.

DORTS Commissioner Cheng Te-fa explained that after reporting to the MOTC for inspection, completing required improvements, passing the certification, and obtaining the operation permission letter, the opening date can be decided. It could open as early as late June.

Kuomintang Taipei City Councilor Li Ming-hsien asked about the trial operation plan during the meeting. Taipei Rapid Transit Corporation President Huang Ching-hsin stated that preliminary discussions suggest a one-month free ride event may be planned, but details are still under discussion, and TRTC will coordinate with the city government's policies.
