Sydney, April 23 (CNA/Agencies) -- Tech giant Microsoft stated today that it will invest $18 billion in Australia over the next three years to enhance computing and Artificial Intelligence (AI) capabilities, expressing optimism about rising AI demand in the country.

According to AFP and Reuters reports, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said this is Microsoft's largest ever investment in Australia. Previously, Microsoft invested $3 billion in 2023 to build data centers in Australia.

This investment will be used to upgrade supercomputers to process the massive amounts of data driving AI development. Microsoft is currently partnering with the Australian government to strengthen its cybersecurity capabilities.

Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese noted that this long-term investment will strengthen national capabilities, solidify cybersecurity, and create opportunities for workers and businesses.

With its abundant renewable energy potential and vast landmass, Australia is actively positioning itself as an ideal location for AI data centers. Besides Microsoft, AI startup Anthropic also revealed this month that it is evaluating the possibility of investing in data centers in Australia.

Microsoft stated that the goal of this investment is to expand its Azure AI supercomputing and cloud infrastructure, enhance cybersecurity, and promote AI skills training across Australia.

Microsoft CEO Nadella pointed out: "Australia has a tremendous opportunity to translate AI into tangible economic growth and societal benefits."
