(CNA Reporter Chang Jung-hsiang, Tainan, 23rd) In February this year, a man surnamed Wu drove under the influence of drugs and without a license, carrying five children and teenagers in a small truck. While passing through Rende District, Tainan City, he refused a police stop and fled, eventually crashing into a utility pole and injuring everyone in the vehicle who were then sent to the hospital. The Tainan District Prosecutors Office concluded its investigation today, indicted him, and transferred the case to the Tainan District Court.

The Tainan District Prosecutors Office stated today that 33-year-old Wu (currently in custody) has multiple prior convictions for drug-related offenses and drug driving. On the afternoon of February 23, after consuming drugs, he took a small truck on the road without a license, carrying five children and teenagers. Two were in the front passenger seat and three were in the back bed of the truck.

While Wu was driving through Zhengyi 1st Street in Rende District, he was stopped by the police for illegally crossing the double yellow lines. Wu refused to stop for inspection and drove illegally all the way, fleeing by running red lights to turn right, changing lanes without turn signals, driving on the wrong side of the road, and making illegal U-turns (the police cited a total of 30 traffic violations). Ultimately, after colliding with a passenger car at the intersection of Yilin 1st Street and Yilin 5th Street, he lost control and crashed into a roadside utility pole.

This drug-impaired, unlicensed driving incident resulted in injuries to the five children and teenagers on board. One of the young girls suffered a head trauma, complicated by an open skull fracture and cranial bleeding, resulting in severe brain damage. Following police interrogation, Wu was handed over to the authorities for prosecution. (Editor: Wu Su-jou) 1150423
