(CNA Reporter Chang Jung-hsiang, Tainan, 23rd) A man surnamed Wu drove a small truck without a license and under the influence of drugs in February, carrying 5 children and youths. Passing through Rende District, Tainan City, he refused a police stop and fled, only to crash into a utility pole, causing injuries to everyone in the vehicle who were then sent to the hospital. The Tainan District Prosecutors Office sought a sentence of more than 8 years today, and the Tainan District Court ruled to detain him.
The Tainan District Court pointed out today that Wu drove without a license and used drugs, completely disregarding the safety of the public and the passengers in his vehicle. He rashly crashed and fled, only stopping when forced to by a collision with another vehicle. Facing a heavy felony with a minimum principal penalty of 3 years or more, his incentive to evade judicial proceedings is high, posing a flight risk.
Furthermore, although Wu admitted to his crimes, he is currently under investigation for multiple other cases, showing a weak sense of law abidance and significant suspicion of criminality. Therefore, the Tainan District Court ruled to place him under detention.
The 33-year-old Wu has a history of drug and drugged-driving offenses. After taking drugs on the afternoon of February 23, he drove a small truck without a license, carrying 5 children and youths, with 2 in the passenger seat and 3 in the rear cargo bed.
While Wu was driving on Zhengyi 1st Street in Rende District, he was stopped by police for illegally crossing the double yellow line.
