(CNA Reporter Cheng Wei-chen, Changhua, 23rd) A village warden surnamed Wu from Lukang Township, Changhua County, was suspected of beating his wife to death at a local Earth God temple in late 2024. Indicted for murder by the Changhua District Prosecutors Office, the case was tried by a citizen judge panel at the Changhua District Court. The court pronounced a sentence today, sentencing him to 13 years in prison for murder.

According to the indictment, the Wu village warden and his wife were family members under the Domestic Violence Prevention Act. At around 6 a.m. on December 20, 2024, the two went to the Earth God temple with volunteers to prepare tangyuan (glutinous rice balls) for a senior citizens' communal meal. Seeing his wife pushing the tangyuan out of the kitchen, the warden threw a metal basin at her twice, missing both times.

The indictment pointed out that the warden, fully aware that the head is a vital part of the human body, punched his wife in the head and grabbed her hair, causing her head to smash against a stainless steel trolley. During the process, his wife never fought back. The warden left the scene at around 8 a.m. regardless of whether his wife was injured. His wife, walking unsteadily, lay down on a lounge chair.

When the warden returned at around 10 a.m., his wife was still lying unconscious and unable to get up. After kicking her, the warden pushed her over, causing her head to forcefully strike the temple stairs. Seeing her collapse and unable to rise, the warden delayed calling an ambulance until around 11 a.m.

His wife was treated at the hospital for over a month. On January 30, 2025, she died of pneumonia and respiratory failure caused by head trauma and intracranial hemorrhage.

The district court stated that the defendant had served as a village warden for three terms, was 51 years old at the time of the crime, and had been married to his wife for 14 years. Dissatisfied with his wife's handling of kitchen matters, he committed an act of assault. Seeing his wife unconscious, he delayed calling 119 for at least 20 minutes, and even concealed the details of the case and surveillance footage afterwards. He was sentenced to 13 years in prison for murder, without deprivation of civil rights. The case can be appealed. (Editor: Lin Shu-hui) 1150423
