(CNA Reporter Hung Hsueh-kuang, Kaohsiung, 23rd) A man surnamed Mao in Kaohsiung slashed his wife with a knife after using drugs. Unhappy that the police took his wife to the station to report the case, he chased and abruptly braked to block the police car with his motorcycle. The Kaohsiung District Court sentenced Mao to 11 months in prison for obstructing official duties, and the case is appealable.
The Kaohsiung District Court's ruling indicated that around 9:00 PM on July 22 last year, Mao consumed the Category 2 narcotic methamphetamine in his residence in Fengshan District and then slashed his wife, surnamed Chen, with a utility knife. Officers from the Zhongxiao Police Station of the Kaohsiung City Police Department's Fengshan Precinct arrived at the scene and drove a patrol car to escort Chen to the station to complete the reporting procedure.
Mao was upset that his wife was taken away by the police. Knowing he had taken drugs, he still rode his motorcycle chasing the police car along the road, overtaking it multiple times and abruptly braking to block it. After the police car arrived at the station, Mao continued to yell loudly and blocked the front door, interfering with official duties. The officers arrested him on the spot as an active criminal.
Mao's urine was collected for testing, which revealed a methamphetamine concentration far exceeding the legal standard. After concluding the investigation, the Kaohsiung District Prosecutors Office indicted him for public endangerment and obstructing official duties. The assault on his wife was not prosecuted because Chen did not press charges.
During the trial, the Kaohsiung District Court determined that Mao ignored the dangers of drugs, used violence while officers were legally executing their duties, and despised state authority. However, considering his confession and his family's economic situation, he was sentenced to 11 months in prison for crimes including obstructing official duties. The seized utility knife was not confiscated as it was unrelated to the obstruction case. The ruling can be appealed. (Editor: Wu Su-jou) 1150423
