(CNA, Reporters Liu Kuan-ting, Taipei, 23rd) Kuomintang (KMT) Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun is planning a visit to the United States. She stated today that she hopes to present an alternative to Cold War thinking during her US trip. She also expressed hope that everyone can jointly end the Cold War mindset, transforming the First Island Chain from the frontline of war into a peaceful and prosperous island chain and region. Furthermore, she anticipates reconciliation, dialogue, and cooperation between the US and China.

After concluding her trip to China, Cheng Li-wun plans to visit the US. She mentioned on the 20th that June is the most likely timeframe and that she needs to carefully arrange her schedule, hoping to meet different friends. Regarding the level of officials she hopes to meet in the US, she responded that the higher, the better, and she will try her best.

During a television interview this afternoon, when asked what her primary focus would be for this US trip, Cheng stated that the most important thing is a message of peace. With the world in turmoil—the Russia-Ukraine war unresolved and new conflicts spreading—the Taiwan Strait is often cited as the most dangerous place in the world. If a war were to break out in the Taiwan Strait, its severity would far exceed that of the Russia-Ukraine war. Therefore, Taiwan must not become the next Ukraine, and the Taiwan Strait should certainly not become the next Strait of Hormuz.

Cheng believes that by traveling to the US this time, she hopes to propose a mindset different from the Cold War. Instead of the whole world being on the brink of war, engaging in hostile rhetoric, and constantly escalating arms races, perhaps everyone can work together to steer in a different direction. She hopes to collectively end the Cold War mentality, shifting the First Island Chain from a theater of war to a peaceful and prosperous zone, altering the development trajectory of East Asia.

Cheng also noted that it is not just cross-strait reconciliation that is needed; she highly anticipates US-China reconciliation, dialogue, and cooperation. Once the world's two great powers can talk, reconcile, and cooperate, everyone can rest easy, and Taiwan will be the happiest and the one celebrating the most. She believes all relevant countries share this common expectation.

Regarding her call to President Lai Ching-te for a meeting and dialogue, Cheng pointed out that she is once again expressing her sincerity and willingness for the good of all Taiwanese people. Coming from this standpoint, she suggested that sometimes people can put aside their egos and pride, because those are worthless and unimportant. While a single meeting won't solve all problems, she hopes to establish a new political culture called rational dialogue, rather than irrational insults and labeling. She hopes to move away from acting like enemies and return to healthy, normal inter-party competition and dialogue. (Edited by: Lin Hsing-meng, Su Lung-chi) 1150423
