(Central News Agency reporter Chen Yu-ting, Taipei, 23rd) A female police officer surnamed Chen from the Zhongzheng First Precinct of the Taipei City Police Department passed away after severe postpartum hemorrhage, despite emergency treatment. Her baby girl is also receiving treatment for brain damage due to lack of oxygen. Taipei Mayor Chiang Wan-an paid his respects today and promised to fully protect her family and child.
Officer Chen gave birth to her first daughter, "An An," on the 18th, but passed away early morning on the 20th due to excessive postpartum bleeding, not even having the chance to look at her newborn daughter, causing heartbreak and sorrow from all circles. "An An" is still under treatment and observation in the neonatal intensive care unit due to hypoxia-induced brain damage.
Mayor Chiang Wan-an posted on Facebook this evening, expressing his deep sorrow over Officer Chen's passing. She was an outstanding, just, and responsible officer. In a heavy-duty unit like the Zhongzheng First Precinct, colleagues always saw her smiling at the front of the line, bravely accepting missions and challenges.
Chiang mentioned that in 2024, Officer Chen stood out among 7,000 police officers to win the "Golden Wu Award," the highest honor of the Taipei City Police. He had personally handed the award to her that day and took a group photo with her family, feeling deeply proud of her.
Chiang stated that he felt heartbroken immediately upon hearing the tragic news and promptly instructed the Police Department to fully assist with funeral arrangements and provide long-term care and support. He also visited her memorial this afternoon to offer incense, noting that "colleagues from the Police Department spontaneously took turns to pay respects and accompany the family," showing how deeply everyone misses her.
Chiang shared that Officer Chen's father mentioned he had been a volunteer police officer for 30 years, and perhaps it was watching her father wear the uniform growing up that sparked her sense of mission to join the police force and serve society. He believes the officer's passing is not just a loss to her family, but a loss to the country.
Chiang added that besides expressing his condolences, he promised the family that whenever needed, the Police Department, Department of Health, and Department of Social Welfare would provide immediate assistance. The city government will certainly accompany the family through their most difficult times. Additionally, he specifically requested the Mackay Memorial Hospital to do everything possible to save Officer Chen's precious daughter.
Chiang told Officer Chen to rest in peace: "We will fully protect your child's health and safety, and protect the family you cared about and loved the most." (Editor: Chang Ya-ching) 1150423
